We have four drivers and four vehicles at our house, three of which are older that 10 years! This means a lot of repairs and maintenance are being done at our house. The need for shop towels come with the territory when you want to make every dollar count and are do-it-yourselfers like us. These DIY Shop Towels come in so handy now after some of my UnPaper Towels for the kitchen were used on the cars.
Ruined my pretty UnPaper Towels!
Step 1 – Collect Useless T-Shirts
So I came up with a solution…make them some free DIY Shop Towels that they can use in the garage so they don’t touch the ones from my kitchen. I saved up a bunch of useless t-shirts that had stains, or horrible prints that no one would buy if they were donated, like the Rin and Stimpy t-shirt that the world could definitely live without or the long ago music festival shirt that no one cares about.
Step 2 – Cut Off the Extras
Cut off the neck, bottom hem, and sleeves.
Next, cut off the shoulder seams.
Step 3 – Cut Up the Sides
Fold the front in half long-wise by folding the picture on the inside. Pull the fabric taunt and cut with scissors.
Repeat for the back of the shirt as well. You will have 4 long pieces, 2 from the front of the shirt and 2 from the back of the shirt.
Step 4 – Cut Each Long Piece in Half
Fold each long piece in half and pull it taunt. Using the scissors, cut each long piece in half so that they are fairly square.
One 2XL shirt makes 8 shop towels!
In the time it took me to watch an episode of Once Upon a Time I cut up 3 2XL shirts to make 24 free DIY Shop Towels. Super Easy!
What is the Savings?
Amazon sells 100 cotton shop towels for $19.99 in various colors making them 20¢ each.
These are FREE and help keep old clothing out of the dumps.
