One of the biggest culprits of waste in the United States is plastic water bottles. This fact sheet produced by the state of New York is eye opening to say the least. Not to mention the facts related to BPA toxins in the plastic, water bottles have become a major source of waste.
Save Money – Buy Stainless and REFILL!
The average cost of pre-filled water bottle is 25 cents when bought in bulk (that’s the small ones). Over my lifetime, I can’t even begin to calculate how many bottles of water I have purchased until reading about BPA last year. The number is really staggering to think about, but let’s just test out some numbers…
If I drank one water bottle a day for a year…
|Bulk||365 bottles a year (1 per day) x $ .25 = $91.25 per year|
|Individually||365 bottles a year (1 per day) x $1.57 = $573.05 per year|
Wow! That’s quite a difference from buying a bulk package from Wal-mart and buying them out of a machine or a convenience store.
Now, let’s see what the cost would be if I buy a stainless steel refill bottle (BPA Free) and refill from my tap at home.
Cost of one year of water refills…
I guess we found the Thrifty Like That answer!
NOTE: Do not refill plastic water bottles! The BPA leaches into the water. More on that in a later post.
